Co-organisers Centre for Cultural Policy Research, The University of Hong Kong

Popular culture is commercial. Popular culture is creative. The twin demand of market success and cultural creativity has always posed great challenges for those working in popular culture.

In this session, popular cultural producers will share their front-line experiences on how they meet the challenges in an age which witnesses the rapid rise of non-local markets and competition, changing media environment and increasingly diversified tastes among users.

We shall focus on two themes:

Making stars:
Stars are central to popular culture. We shall discuss several outstanding cases of making, managing and presenting popular cultural stars in the Greater China region in the new global age. We shall see the various ways in which cultural producers mix unique local and cosmopolitan elements to excite regional and even global cultural imaginations.

Crossing Boundaries:
The best popular cultural works appeal to ordinary people’s pleasures at the same time as they generate deeper cultural resonances. Popular cultural producers often need to work on the edge, and make innovations across conventional boundaries of media and performance. We shall, through the reflections of two outstanding practitioners, look at the craft and vision of boundary crossing in popular culture.
